Perhaps you want to join us at the garden but you don’t get a lot of free time without your kids, or you would like to teach your kids all there is to learn from tending a garden. Either way, here at High Street Garden we love when families (with kids of all ages) join us. I joined the Community Garden this year and thought I would share some tips that I have learned from bringing my almost 2 year old with me...

It’s scape season! Garlic scapes are the immature flower of hardneck garlic varieties, which must be removed in order for the bulb to properly develop. They are delicious eaten raw or cooked , imparting either a “green garlic” flavour like a garlic chive when raw, or a very mild sweet garlic flavour when roasted or sautéed. Some of our gardeners have even pickled them! We are harvesting scapes this week, why not join us? #garlicscapes #scapeseason #communitygardeners #communitygardens

One of the biggest conversation pieces at High Street this season has been our Indigo Rose tomato planting. It’s easy to see why - the tomatoes are so unique and eye-catching. The fruits you see in this photo are still not quite ripe: when they ripen they will have reddish flames of colour at the blossom end. #indigorosetomato #gothgarden #heritagevarieties #communitygarden
Tonight’s Drop-In Gardening has had to take a rain check! Thunderstorms are beautiful from a covered porch but not so much in the garden. Luckily all our little plants are loving all the rain π We’ll be back in the garden on Sunday, 9 am to 11 am: hope to see you then!!

It’s a foggy morning here at the garden. This week the kiddos of the community are most excited for the #goldenraspberries also known as “salmon berries” as shared by 8 year old gardener Aden π
Drop in tomorrow Sunday July 4th from 9-11am to sample & join us

Hey Orillia! Have you always wondered what’s growing at the High Street Community Garden? Today is your chance to find out! Join @orilliarecreationandculture Community Garden Coordinator Emily Wilson at 5:30 pm for an edible tour through the garden. Everyone welcome, no fee for the experience, sign up through the City of Orillia Recreation website or register when you arrive at the garden.
Can’t wait to see you there! #juneisrecreationmonth #communitygardentour
Two of our community partners, @sharingplaceorillia and @orilliarecreationandculture have facilitated an awesome donation of some seedlings! Peppers, cabbages, tomatoes and squash, here we come!
Since there’s lots to get planted, why not join us this Sunday morning, 9 am to 11 am? Everyone is welcome, and we may have some extra seedlings for community members to take home too! #seeyouatthegarden #communitypartnerships #communitygardens #plantingseason
In recognition that many of us gardeners are settlers on Indigenous land, we are taking steps to learn about food practices of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and Wendat Nations. High Street Garden is located on unceded territory, traditionally cultivated by these nations. Today, we planted a Three Sisters garden consisting of Tuscarora White Corn, Algonquin Pumpkin and bean seeds saved from last year’s garden. Check out Mohawk Seed Keepers to see the amazing preservation work done by the folks there, and to educate yourself on traditional plant varieties. #wearealltreatypeople #decolonize
One of our pollinator friends visiting the chive blossoms! While High Street Garden primarily grows food, we make sure we include flowering edible plants and native pollinator plants like wild bergamot and coneflowers. Feeding the insects helps us feed our community - the majority of fruits and vegetables rely on pollinators to grow properly. #thankstobees #communitygardeners #chives
Tomato season is full swing! We'll be harvesting these deliciously sweet yellow tomatoes, campari tomatoes, beans and kale tomorrow. Stop by between 9-11 am or, check the harvest basket/cooler afterward. All are welcome to help with harvesting and other garden projects going on too! π

This little guy looks cute and fuzzy, but luckily we didn’t pick him up when we saw him in the garden! Turns out it’s an American Dagger Moth, and the black bristles can embed in human skin and cause an itchy rash. A good reminder to ‘look but not touch’ as much as possible when we’re interacting with other creatures in the garden. #caterpillar #gardencritter
